Simply Storytime : Patterns and Soap Packaging

Many consumer product brands rely on generic surface patterns that prioritize decoration over meaning, resulting in packaging that lacks narrative depth or emotional connection. Children’s products, in particular, often miss opportunities to integrate storytelling into their visual identity in a way that is both cohesive and sophisticated.

I wanted to explore how illustration and pattern design could be used as more than ornamentation—serving instead as a storytelling tool that evokes nostalgia, imagination, and emotional connection. By drawing from well-known children’s stories, my goal was to create designs that feel comforting and familiar while remaining visually engaging for both children and adults.

I created a series of cohesive illustrated pattern designs, each structured around the themes, characters, and visual motifs of classic children’s stories. These patterns were then applied to a line of soap packaging to test how narrative-driven illustration could function within a real-world product context. Building on this concept, I developed Simply Storytime, a fictional brand identity in which each soap scent is directly inspired by the story represented in its corresponding pattern. I designed the brand name, logo system, packaging layout, and pattern applications to ensure visual consistency across the product line while allowing each story to maintain its own unique personality.

The final outcome is a unified brand and packaging system that merges illustration, storytelling, and product design. Simply Storytime transforms everyday soap into a sensory and visual experience, where scent, pattern, and narrative work together t

The final outcome is a unified brand and packaging system that merges illustration, storytelling, and product design. Simply Storytime transforms everyday soap into a sensory and visual experience, where scent, pattern, and narrative work together to create a memorable and emotionally resonant product line. The project demonstrates how illustration can function strategically within branding to build recognition and meaning.

This project strengthened my skills in pattern development, visual system building, and packaging design while reinforcing the value of concept-driven design. It also highlighted the importance of maintaining consistency across multiple products within a brand family. Simply Storytime illustrates how thoughtful illustration can elevate functional objects into storytelling experiences.
