Thurmont Skate Park : Logo Proposal
Thurmont Skate Park : Logo Concept and Identity Proposal
As communities invest in new public recreational spaces, strong visual identities play an important role in generating excitement, encouraging use, and establishing a sense of ownership among residents. A new skate park attraction in town required a logo that could represent the energy of skate culture while remaining approachable and inclusive to skaters of all ages and skill levels.
My goal was to create a mark that felt bold and modern without being intimidating or overly aggressive. I wanted the identity to reflect both the dynamic nature of skateboarding and the character of the local environment, helping the skate park feel rooted in its community rather than disconnected from it.
I designed a logo centered on simplicity, legibility, and versatility across signage, merchandise, and digital platforms. The visual concept incorporates a stylized representation of the Catoctin Mountains, a well-known natural landmark that overlooks the town and serves as a recognizable symbol of the area. By reducing the mountains to clean, geometric forms, I created a mark that is easily scalable and memorable while maintaining a friendly tone. Bold linework and balanced proportions were used to ensure the logo would remain clear at both large and small sizes, from entrance signage to skateboards and apparel.
The final logo proposal delivers a strong, approachable identity that connects the skate park to its geographic setting while reflecting the spirit of creativity and movement associated with skate culture. The design is flexible enough to function across a wide range of applications and provides the foundation for a future visual system.
This project reinforced the importance of designing for community-centered spaces and highlighted how local landmarks can be abstracted into effective brand symbols. It strengthened my skills in logo simplification, concept development, and designing identities that balance personality with functionality. The project demonstrates how thoughtful branding can help public spaces feel welcoming, recognizable, and lasting.
